October is Non-GMO month. Celebrate with GO VEGGIE!

September 29, 2017

GMOs, and particularly GMO labeling, have been a hot topic over the last few of years. Fortunately, it’s an issue food companies are increasingly paying more attention to.

GMOs (genetically modified organisms) are plants, animals or microorganisms that have had their genetic makeup altered, resulting in unstable combinations of genes that do not happen in nature. The purpose of GMOs is to have crops that are resistant to herbicides and pesticides, insects and plagues, drought and frost, etc. They have an impact on the environment as well as on farmers, and their safety is most definitely questionable.

The 10 most common GMO foods are:

  • Soy
  • Corn
  • Canola oil
  • Cotton (for cottonseed oil)
  • Milk
  • Sugar
  • Aspartame
  • Zucchini and yellow squash
  • Alfalfa
  • Papaya

Currently there is no mandatory labeling for GMOs in the US, which means, unless you are consuming products that are 100% organic or are verified and labeled Non-GMO , there is no way to know if GMOs are present.

The Non-GMO Project:

The Non-GMO Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building and protecting a non-GMO food supply, through consumer education and outreach programs; marketing support provided to Non-GMO Project Verified brands; and training resources and merchandising materials provided to retailers.

Non-GMO Project Verified is the market leader for GMO avoidance and one of the fastest growing labels in the retail sector, and offers North America’s most trusted third-party verification for non-GMO food and products.

The Non-GMO Project Standard is a consensus-based document crafted with the insight from dozens of industry experts, reflecting a dynamic range of perspectives. In a world of shifting and quickly developed technologies, the Standard remains current and collaborative through ongoing public comment periods.

Because of this collaboration with engaged stakeholder groups, Non-GMO Project Verified is a meaningful and achievable way for suppliers, brands and retailers to show their commitment to providing consumers transparent choice in the marketplace.

GO VEGGIE is proud to announce that their entire line of Vegan Cream Cheese and Vegan Shreds is Non-GMO Verified! And still, cholesterol, lactose and gluten free, and lower in saturated fat and calories than dairy cream cheese.
