This time of year has many people reflecting on how they can make a difference in their community. No matter what your interests are or where you live, it can be easy to give back this holiday season. Here are a few ideas to get you going.
If you’re thinking about volunteering your time this holiday season, there are plenty of opportunities for you:
- Bake. A great family-friendly option this year is to bake cookies, casseroles and other dishes with the kids. Consider giving the cookies to the local firefighters and police officers. You can also freeze homemade meals and drop them off with elderly neighbors. Not only will you enjoy family time together, you’ll also feel good knowing the food is going to a worthy cause.
- Visit the elderly. This time of year can be especially lonely for those living in on their own or in a nursing home. Brighten their season by taking them a card and decorations for their space, or simply give them the gift of company. Whether you’re visiting them in their own house or in a nursing home, be sure to call ahead to announce and schedule your social call. (Make your visit even more special by taking along a holiday recipe from GO Veggie!)
‘Tis the season to donate to a charity. Since there are so many ways, we’ve narrowed it down for you:
- Raid the pantry. If you don’t have time to make homemade meals for the people in your community, you can still help feed hungry mouths by donating items to your local food shelf.
- Clean out the closet (and the toy box). Donating food isn’t the only way to help those less fortunate. This is also a great time of year to give clothing and toys a new home. Lightly used items can be donated to local shelters or charities.
Whether your contribution is big or small, you can make a difference this year by giving back this holiday season.
